Litter sister to Midi and a small compact Lab – not liked in the show ring but has surprised us with a few breed club awards including 1st, Merit has competed successfully in many working tests to Intermediate level and recently ran in the Inter Club Event for Bakadam Gundog Training Club, gaining 4th place overall.

2005 Her maternal duties have finished and she is spayed. She enjoys being a “schoolmistress” teaching young handlers gundog work

2013 January 6th She was the goody two shoes of the dog world, so much so that she never put a foot wrong and maybe because she was never any trouble, her light was hidden under the proverbial bushel. But as she grew older, her character shone through and she became the focus of the pack, the matriarch who stood for all the good things in a dog/human relationship. She was a brave small dog who was not going to let go of life that easily all the time she could join in and do all the things she had loved, even though arthritis in her front leg gave her a jaunty swagger as she cantered for short distances yesterday afternoon. And so it was that last night, as every night, as I took all of the dogs out for their evening walk, she tore her cruciate ligament. The cold fact was that she would not be able to get up with only two legs, even a young dog would struggle. Her lovely 15 year old eyes told me that the pain was too much, please let me just stay here and please stroke the pain away. So I did, until the vet came, and then, so quickly, she was released. Merit, my tears are only for myself, as I can see your happy smiling face as I tell your story.

Ah, little Miesje rejoins “Our Dogs” . She has lived , and still lives, with Alex and Greg Revell for the past seven years with her son “Bodi”. Miesje is the mother of Farah and Seven, and now grandmother to “Beshlie” and “Halley” and great grandmother to all Beshlie pups!

Monday December 10th 2012

Today Miesje told Greg and Alex that she was very tired and would like to rest. Always affectionately known as “moo moo” she was the gentlest of all little ladies and had lived with Greg , Alex and family for many years…more years than she had been here with us, so she passed away surrounded by those who loved her and looked after her so well that she lived to be 17, all but a month. Thank you Greg and Alex for giving her such a loving and caring home. Go gently moo moo, there are not many left like you.

Phoebe is gundog trained and picks up on the local shoot. She has completed working tests although has never been placed. She stood well at Crufts (2002)in Open Bitch being placed in the cut from 20 top class bitches. This may not seem much, but her litter of pups was only 7 weeks old on the day she achieved this! One of these pups was Roytan Slipstream.

2005 Phoebe’s claim to fame! is that she is Roytan Slipstreams’ mum and how proud are we all? Her gentle and loving character has shone through to all her pups.

She has had 3 litters and is now enjoying life as a sprightly 8 year old beating and picking up on the local Ashburnham Shoot

2008 Martin took her beating on a couple of days and she came out with me on beaters day. She is 12 years old now but still enjoying herself and enthusiastic

2009 Martin took her shooting for the last time, I am sure she is going to miss it next year.

2010 Phoebe has settled in to “kitchen” life and has decided that retirement the relaxed way is quite good after all!

2012 March 12th.

As I fed the Labrador puppies just now at 12 o’clock, the radio was playing a beautiful violin rendition of Freddie Mercury’s “Who wants to live forever?” As I sat with the puppies, the music brought tears down my cheeks and the puppies licked away the sadness. I had just said goodbye to Phoebe. She has no cancer now, my grand old lady is whole again and if she was with me right now she would want to go for a walk in the sunshine.

2011  How can I put into words how I feel? Yesterday, so soon, I lost Farah…so suddenly that it has shaken me to the core and I can’t stop crying, showing my human failing of being emotionally unwilling and unprepared, needing time to come to terms before acting. But for her sake, I faltered for only 12 hours before affording her the same dignity and respect that she always gave me. I wished for another miracle but maybe Farah herself with her unfailing selflessness, gave me that extra day to come to terms with her sudden blindness.
No fumbling around the field for my 30 mile an hour girl, my mouse digger, my unerring solid rock of a Vizsla, my Farah.

1998 CRUFTS BITCH CC

The peak of Sophie’s career (and mine) was winning the Bitch Challenge Certificate at Crufts in 1998 out of limit. Before that she had wins at Crufts, and at most major championship shows she has always placed.

She was Group 3 at Isle of Wight Gundog Show in 1998 and has been awarded many BOB and R BOB at open shows.

Although never fully trained as a gundog she has been picking up on our local shoot and acquitted herself well, constantly finding and pointing, flushing out game that others have missed!

2007 At the grand age of 12 Sophie passes her KC Bronze Good Citizen Award!

2009  Sophie is 14 now and although her eyesight is failing and she seems to have ” selective hearing”  the rest of her body keeps her fit and healthy.

2010  The going is getting a bit tough but Sophie still asks to come for a walk first thing in the morning and last thing at night. The heavy snow this January has made her feel disorientated and sometimes her wonderful scenting ability has been thwarted so I have to keep a very close eye on her. She is happy for a while longer……..

February 16th 2011

I was with her when she was born, and I was with her today as she left me behind. Sixteen years is a long old time to have such a good brave friend, and I shall miss her and all her funny ways. God bless Sophie.
